Abstract

[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] To increase the efficiency of an audiofrequency amplifier used for telephone work or for modulating a wireless transmitter, two parallel paths are provided between the input and output of the system, one path including a volume-compressing stage and the other a volume-expanding stage. As shown, the input current at 10 is fed from amplifier A1 in series with a volume-compressor VA1, C1 and amplifier A3, and also to an amplifier A2 in series with a volume-compressor VA,2, C2 and an amplifier A4, the two last stages feeding the output 11 in parallel. Alternatively, both A3 and A4 may be followed by a duplication of the stages between 10 and 11, Fig. 2 (not shown). The control devices may be combined to form a potentiometer arrangement with a tapping which is varied in accordance with signal volume. The branch containing the compressor predominates at low input-levels, whilst the branch with the expander predominates at high input-levels.
