[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A negative feed-back amplifier of the plug-in type may be inserted in a number of positions and the gain or output impedance is determined by the position in which it is inserted. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the required control of the gain or impedance is obtained by adjustment of the feed-back by selecting feed-back path F1 or F2. The elements in the feed-back path may be wholly or in part mounted on the panel into which the amplifier is inserted. In different positions the amplifier may have different gain/frequency characteristics. In this way a single type of spare amplifier may be used in different parts of a communication system as required.
