Abstract

518,753. Saddles. SMITH, W. H. Sept,. 5, 1938, No. 25861. [Class 136 (iii)] A saddle for cycles &c. comprises a metal plate or like rigid supporting member, and a moulded latex or sponge rubber cap or cover to fit over and be secured to such supporting member and provided in its underside with substantial cavities or recesses which are ventilated and the portions between which are supported on the metal &c. supporting member, and is characterized in that the rubber cap is extended downwards to surround the supporting member, and has securing means below the supporting member. On a concave rigid plate 1 of metal, wood, compressed fibre &c. is secured a resilient pad 4 of moulded latex or sponge rubber having cavities or recesses 7 formed on its underside by longitudinal and transverse partitions 7<1> which rest on the plate 1, a peripheral flange 5 being formed with a slot 6 of key-hole section adapted to be sprung over the edge of the plate by stretching the pad. The cavities 7 communicate with ventilation holes 8 in the plate 1. The pad may be provided with a skin of non-porous rubber, or with a cover 'of leather &c. Drainage holes may be formed in the upper wall of the pad. In modifications, the plate 1 has a downturned flange at its edge, and the flange 5 of the pad is shouldered to fit over and around the flanged edge of the plate, to which it is secured by press-studs; or the pad may be secured by means of straps attached to or integral with it, or attached to a removable leather &c. cover fitting over the pad.
