Abstract

539,829. Pneumatic cushions. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. April 29, 1940, No. 7614. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Class 52 (iv)] A reinforcing diaphragm 3 is located between upper and lower rubber or like impervious walls 1, 2 formed to provide parallel air chambers 10 on the upper side and other parallel chambers 16 on the lower side transverse to the upper ones, the diaphragm being secured to both walls around the edges and at spaced intermediate points. Marginal chambers 6 on the upper side communicate through eyeletted openings 24 with chambers on the lower side and all chambers are inflated together through a nipple 25. Snap-fasteners 30 are secured at spaced points on the underside for securing the cushion to a support. In the manufacture of the cushion complementary top and bottom moulds are dipped into a rubber composition and then brought together over the diaphragm, and steam, compressed air or inert gas is injected while the assembly is vulcanized.
