Abstract
518,588. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1938, No. 25460. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] An incandescent screen for use in cathode-ray tubes consists of a wire mesh 10 in the interstices of which are mounted independent rodlets 11 of refractory oxide ; these may have refractory caps 12. They may be made from the nitrates of thorium, cerium, calcium or manganese which on reduction by heat produce the oxide ; preferably thorium nitrate in water is used with boric oxide as a flux, this solution being applied to the wire mesh by painting, dipping or spraying. When sufficient nitrate is adherent the mass is heated by applying a current to the mesh which is temporarily attached to end electrodes 14, Fig. 7 ; to ensure heating of the edge of the screen, non-coated wires 15 are placed alongside and current also passed therethrough. The caps 12 are formed by spraying on nitrate solution after the main parts of the rodlets have been formed and subsequent heating. The screen so formed is mounted in a frame 18 with a mica backing 19, and mica heat insulating strips 20. The image produced on the screen can be projected by a lens on a viewing screen.
