Abstract

349,927. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Elder, F. R. ; 1100, Palmer Avenue, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 28, 1930, No. 2958. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] Vapour-discharge devices are provided with a (cupshaped anode 4, Fig. 1, providing an electrostatically shielded region within which the metal support 5 is secured to the anode, the support 5 being covered by an insulating tube 8 from its join with the anode to its seal 7 through the envelope 1. A glass sleeve 10 fitting closely around the tube 8 protects the seal 7 and extends into the region inside the anode. The anode 4 is of carbon shaped to avoid sharp corners. In a power rectifier, the arrangement prevents arcing to the anode or its supports during the inverse half of the cycle. The cathode may comprise a nickel cylinder 2 coated on one or both sides with alkaline-earth electron-emitting material and also forming a heat-screen around the heater 3. Mercury 18 provides vapour producing positive ions and neutralizing the spacecharge. In a modification, Fig. 2, a directly-heated cathode comprises a crimped nickel ribbon 15 formed into a helix, flanged metal shields 17 being carried by one of the leads 14 and the ends of the ribbon 15 being formed into sleeves 16 welded to the leads 14. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the termination of the sleeve 10 above the anode and the construction of the ribbon cathode of Fig. 2 with the crimpings at an angle to the ribbon depending on the pitch of the helix and so formed that, in each trough, heat from one side is reflected back from the other. The crimpings may be longitudinal of the ribbon and the ribbon may be formed into a horizontal helix or spiral. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
