[Class 38 (iii)] In a system in which loads 10, 12 are driven synchronously by being coupled mechanically to induction machines 13, 14 which are interconnected electrically, and the load 10 is driven at any desired speed by a motor 11, provision is made for accelerating the load 12 from rest when the motor 11 is already running at the desired speed. If the machine 13 is being rotated in the same direction as its. primary field, then after closing switch 16 resistance in the interconnection of the secondaries is cut out in steps by contactors 29, 30, 31. If the machine 13 is being rotated in the opposite direction to its primary field, then it is necessary for the accelerating resistance to be included in the primary interconnection instead of the secondary.
