Abstract
476,174. Control of several motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and OVENS, G. June 2, 1936, No. 15404. [Class 38 (iii)] Apparatus for synchronizing a pair of machines 1, 4, having primary windings connected to a common source 2, comprises means 3, 5, for running the machines up to speed, a motor 7 with polyphase windings on its stator and rotor connected respectively to polyphase secondary windings on the two machines, a zero-speed device 8 mechanically coupled to the motor, and means by which at zero speed of the motor a relay 9 having a drop-out time delay operates to energize the operating coil of a switch 6 whereby the secondary windings of the machines 1, 4, are interconnected. The machines 1, 4, are coupled to respective motors 3, 5, and when they are interconnected by the switch 6 they maintain synchronism between the motors 3, 5. The windings of the motor 7 are connected to opposite sides of the switch 6, and the motor 7 drives an interrupter 8 comprising a cylinder divided into segments engaged by brushes connected across the coil of the relay 9. When the speeds of the machines 1, 4, are equal, the speed at which the interrupter 8 is driven falls to zero and the contacts 9a of the relay 9 close the energizing circuit of the switch 6, which maintains itself over contacts 6a. The system is applicable to any number of machines.
