Abstract
518.000. Phase changing; running polyphase motors from single phase supply. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MAGGS, A. H.' Aug. 22, 1938, No. 24663. [Class 38 (ii)] In a Ferraris-Arno system in which a capacitor motor is employed as pilot motor as described in Specification 441,062, condensers 6, 7, 8 are connected effectively in series with the primary windings 3, 4, 5 of the motor to neutralize the leakage reactance thereof. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, for star-connected windings, the starpoint is opened and a delta-connected arrangement of condensers 13, 14, 15 is inserted. With delta-connected windings, the condensers are inserted in the sides of the delta. In a further arrangement, a single condenser is inserted between one of the phases and the third line of the outgoing three-phase supply. In all arrangements, the condenser or condensers may be connected through a step-up transformer, andresistances may be connected across the condensers for suppressing self-excitation of the motor.
