Convention date, Nov. 2, 1931. [Class 37.] A variable reactance for use in starting a D.C. motor comprises a pair of polyphase cores 17, 18, each carrying A.C. windings in each phase, while a D.C. saturating winding surrounds all the A.C. windings on both cores. The A.C. windings on corresponding phase legs are connected in parallel and arranged to provide opposite polarity relationships between the D.C. and A.C. magnetizations of the respective legs, in order to prevent distortion of the wave form by the saturating winding.
