Abstract
514,221. Scutching flax &c. AUTOMATIC FLAX PRODUCTION UNITS. May 21, 1938, No. 15177. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 120 (i)] A method of scutching flax &c. in which a lap of stalks is subjected to the action of the radial scraping blades of two co-operating mills mounted side by side at the same horizontal level and rotating one in the other in opposite directions, is characterised in that the lap of stalks is scutched by one blade at a time, each blade terminating its action and releasing the lap as the following blade of the opposite mill commences its action and occupying at this time a position not below the horizontal. In a machine for carrying out the method, the flax &c. stalks carried by belts 10, 11 are treated by blades 8 bolted to plates 7 attached to arms 6 rotated by shafts 3. Each plate 7 is bent to provide a heel portion 12 carrying a blade 13 which operates to bring the stalks released by a "lower" scutching blade of one mill under an " upper blade of the opposite mill for more complete scraping. The plates 7 may be perforated at 15 so that air currents produced by the heels 12 may be directed by the aid of plates 14 to drive the stalks beneath the next scutching blade. In a modification the heel portion of each blade is separate from and adjustable with respect to the scutching blade.
