Abstract
531,642. Decorticating fibrous leaves. COMPANIA GENERAL DE EXPLOTACION DE FIBRAS SOC. ANON, and UNZUETA, L.S. July 20, 1939, No. 21136. [Class 120 (i)] Fibres are obtained from the leaves or stems of soft plants, e.g. agaves, by subjecting the plants to a crushing operation and transverse cutting by passing them longitudinally between pairs of fluted rollers and then removing the pulp by subjecting first one side and then the other side of the material while supported against indiarubber or like soft and resilient material, to the action of rollers provided with hackling pins or rubbing or rasping elements. As shown, the leaves &c. are drawn longitudinally from a table 10 by the pairs of fluted crushing rollers A, A<SP>1</SP> and pass between one or more indiarubber rollers C and drums B provided with teeth or pins to the depulping rollers D, D<SP>1</SP> which are arranged to act upon opposite sides of the material while it is supported by rollers C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>11</SP> of indiarubber or other soft flexible material : the fibres are delivered by a pair of rollers F. The depulping rollers may be provided with flexible steel sheets disposed longitudinally thereof and after depulping the material may be subjected to the rubbing action of a roller provided with radial blades. More than two sets of depulping rollers may be provided, the axes of the rollers of the second set may be arranged in a plane at an angle to the plane containing the axes of the first set, and the plane of the axes of the second set may be at an angle to the plane containing the axes of the rollers F.
