Abstract
191,178. Carter, H. A., Davis, J., and Foster, W. D. Oct. 11, 1921. Breaking and scutching apparatus. - Ramie, jute, hemp or like stems or straws of fibrous leaves are first completely severed by being passed between splitting rollers B, B<1>, Fig. 2, which are correspondingly grooved, knives C on the upper one passing through the stems &c. into the grooves in the lower one. They are then pressed flat and passed through a device comprising two pairs of rollers H, H<1>, J, J<1>, Fig. 4, and a scraping or brushing roller K, which removes the outer skin. The material is held up to the roller K by a spring- supported board L. They are finally subjected to the action of a fan or roller O, Fig. 5, having resilient beaters of rubber, leather, &c. to remove the pith &c., of rollers Q, R coacting with a curved plate P, and of a brush S. The various devices are mounted on a common bed-plate and are driven by gearing from a common shaft.
