Abstract
512,820. Treating textiles with liquids. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. (Celanese Corporation of America). March 25, 1938, No. 9203. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A'single layer of fabric containing yarns of a thermoplastic cellulose derivative is stiffened, two or more such fabrics are united, or one or more such fabrics are united with one or more non-thermoplastic fabrics, by subjecting to heat and pressure in the presence of an assisting liquid which contains a substantial proportion of a true solvent for the cellulose derivative and which, while not a solvent for the cellulose derivative at ordinary temperatures, becomes one at elevated temperatures. All the ingredients of the assisting liquid, except small quantities of non-volatile substances such as plasticizers and pigments, are sufficiently volatile to be entirely removed at the treating temperature. The cellulose derivative fabric may be woven, knitted, or netted from cellulose derivative' and, if desired, non-thermoplastic yarns, e.g. cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose, or silk. The non-thermoplastic fabric may be silk, cotton, or linen. The assembly to be treated may comprise fabric layers woven together and interconnected by extra warp or weft threads. As true solvents for cellulose acetate, acetone, dioxane, methylene ethylene ether, methyl acetate, diacetone alcohol, and methyl glycol are suitable, with latent solvents, e.g. lower alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol as diluents and, if desired, small quantities of non-solvents such as water. A plasticizer may be added to the liquid or may be applied to the cellulose derivative or non- thermoplastic fabric, for example, ethylhydroxyethyl-, methyl-methoxyethyl-, methylethoxyethyl-, di-(methoxyethyl)-, dimethyl-, or diethyl-phthalate, triacetin, diglycerine acetate, acetophenone, benzophenone, dibutyl- or diamyltartrate, or triphenyl phosphate. The assisting liquid may consist of industrial alcohol or methanol, acetone or dioxane, and isopropyl formate, methyl or ethyl acetate, diacetone alcohol, or methyl glycol. The fabrics may be shaped or moulded during pressing. Cuffs, collars, brassieres, belts, gauntlets, shoe uppers, and hats may be made. Besides cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, butyrate, nitrate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate, acetatenitrate, ethyl or benzyl cellulose, or ethyl cellulose acetate may be used. The Provisional Specification describes also the use, instead of cellulose derivatives, of polyvinyl acetate or chloracetate, polyvinyl ethers, polyacrylic and alkylacrylic esters.
