Abstract

Strips of material for use in forming permanent creases in garments, to which they are applied by heat and pressure, consist of strips of fabric of a non-thermoplastic nature, but containing thermoplastic material. These strips may be formed by coating a cotton fabric on one side with a solution containing 10 parts by weight of the resin obtained by the copolymerization of 40 per cent vinyl acetate and 60 per cent vinyl chloride, 20 parts of acetone, 10 parts of butyl acetate, 4 parts of ethyl lactate, 3 parts of methoxy glycol acetyl ricinoleate and 3 parts butoxyglycol phthalate. The fabric is dried at 90 DEG C. and cut into tapes which are applied to the garment creases by pressure at 130 DEG C. In another example, a fabric consisting of plasticised polyvinyl acetate warp fibres and cotton weft fibres is assembled with a cotton fabric. An aqueous acetone solution containing approximately 40 per cent of acetone is applied to the cotton fabric and the assembly united under pressure at 50 DEG to 60 DEG C. and subsequently cut into tapes. In a further example, a fabric is formed containing 40 per cent of filaments of cellulose acetate incorporating a water-insoluble plasticiser such as diethyl phthalate or dimethyl phthalate and 60 per cent of cotton fibres, woven so that the cellulose filaments are exposed on the back only. The fabric is cut into tapes and applied to the garment by heat and pressure during which process a volatile solvent and plasticiser may be present, a suitable mixture being 92 per cent acetone and 8 per cent diethyl phthalate. Alternatively, a latent solvent may be employed, e.g. ethyl alcohol or methyl alcohol. This solvent may be used in an aqueous solution, a suitable mixture being 70 per cent ethyl alcohol, 22 per cent water and 8 per cent triacetin.
