Abstract

646,200. Compound fabrics. TRUBENISED, Ltd. April 30, 1947, No. 11565. Convention date, April 30, 1946. [Class 140] In making stiffened articles of wearing apparel by wetting with solvents and hotpressing, an assembly of two layers of fabric and an intermediate ply containing a material which is convertible into an adhesive state by the action of solvents, the solvent is a mixture comprising an active solvent, a latent solvent, and a diluent, the amount of active solvent lying between 7¢ and 10 per cent. An active solvent is one which renders the potentially adhesive material tacky at room temperature in a short time measurable in seconds. A latentsolvent does not act at room temperatures but renders the potentially adhesive material tacky at the pressing temperature of 100-160‹ C. The fabric assembly may be left in the solvent mixture for long or short periods, and may be hot-pressed immediately or some time after soaking. When cellulose acetate is used as the potentially adhesive material, the active solvent may be acetone or methyl acetate, the latent solvent may be triacetin, benzyl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, dimethyl phthalate, dimethylglycol phthalate, or dibutyl tartrate, and the diluent may be methyl or ethyl alcohol. The mixture may contain some water.
