Abstract

A fabric containing a thermoplastic derivative of cellulose is stiffened by subjecting to heat and pressure in the presence of water and a plasticizer for the cellulose derivative. The fabric may be woven, knitted, or netted from cellulose derivative yarns, together, if desired, with non-thermoplastic yarns, e.g. cotton, regenerated cellulose, linen, wool, or silk, may be made from mixed yarns, or may be a non-thermoplastic fabric coated or impregnated with the cellulose derivative. The impregnating or coating cellulose derivative may be in finely-divided form and applied, e.g. by spraying, and with or without a plasticizer; gums, e.g. arabic or tragacanth may be used to promote adhesion of the powder. The plasticizer may be added to the spinning solution from which the cellulose derivative yarns are formed, or may be incorporated by coating the cellulose derivative fabric with a solution thereof, e.g. in benzol. Diethyl or dimethyl phthalate, diethyl or dibutyl tartrate, diacetin, or triacetin may be used as plasticizer, and cellulose derivatives such as the acetate, formate propionate, or butyrate, or ethers such as ethyl or benzyl cellulose. Finely divided pigment may be incorporated with the cellulose derivative. The fabrics may be used for collars, cuffs, fronts, &c. of shirts, hats and parts thereof, and garment linings.
