[Class 140] A stiffened compound fabric suitable for wearing-apparel, e.g. for collars, cuffs, fronts, &c. of shirts, hats and parts thereof, and linings, is made by uniting under heat and pressure in the presence of water an assembly of fabrics each containing filaments or fibres of a thermoplastic cellulose derivative, at least one fabric containing both a water-soluble and a waterinsoluble plasticizer for the cellulose derivative, and at least one fabric containing no plasticizer. The assembly may comprise two cellulose derivative fabrics, one free from plasticizer, or three fabrics, the middle one being treated with the plasticizers. The appearance of the outer plasticizer-free fabrics is substantially unchanged after pressing, and part or all of the water-soluble plasticizer may be washed out subsequently. Suitable water-insoluble plasticizers are dimethyl-, diethyl-, or dimethoxyethyl-phthalate, and water-soluble, dimethyl- or diethyl-tartrate, and mono-, di-, or triacetin. A mixture of dimethoxyethyl-phthalate and triacetin is useful for cellulose acetate fabrics. The plasticizers may be incorporated in the solution from which the cellulose derivative yarns are formed, or may be applied to the fabric, e.g. by spraying or dipping, from a solution in benzol, ethyl, or methyl alcohol. The fabrics may be woven, knitted, or netted, may consist solely of cellulose derivative yarns, or may comprise also cotton, regenerated cellulose, linen, wool, or natural silk yarns. Fabrics made from mixed yarns comprising cotton and cellulose acetate fibres or filaments may be used. Two layers of cellulose acetate or mixed fabric may be united to an intermediate cellulose acetate or mixed fabric treated with plasticizer. Pigments such as titanium dioxide, antimony trioxide, and lamp black may be present in the assembly. The fabrics may be cut to shape an:l sewn together before union. The plasticizer and the heat and pressure may be applied locally. Cellulose formate, propionate, or butyrate, ethyl- or benzyl cellulose may replace cellulose acetate.
