Abstract

551,993. Artificial silk etc.; compound fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 16, 1941, No. 11838. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1940. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A laminating fabric adapted to be united to another fabric or fabrics by the application of heat and pressure is obtained by ageing in a moist atmosphere at an elevated temperature a fabric containing filaments, fibres, or yarns of an organic derivative of cellulose, and a plasticizer therefor. The process facilitates absorption of the plasticizer by the cellulose derivative fibres and in the case of fabrics containing non-thermoplastic fibres as well as cellulose derivative fibres it facilitates migration of the plasticizer from the. other fibres to the cellulose derivative fibres and removes any greasiness due to unabsorbed plasticizer. The ageing treatment may take place in a chamber maintained at 30-70‹C. The humidity may be maintained at 30 per cent. relative humidity up to saturation. Live steam may be introduced into the ageing chamber to maintain the desired humidity. The laminating fabric may contain 25-35 per cent. of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester or ether fibres together with fibres of cotton, regenerated cellulose, linen, silk, or wool. The fabric may be made by weaving, knitting, knotting, or netting, preferably in such manner that the cellulose derivative fibres form floats on the surface of the fabric. The plasticizer may be incorporated to the extent of 90-140 per cent. of the cellulose derivative. The plasticizer may be a sulphonamide, phthalate, tartrate, phosphate, or triacetin. Pigments may be incorporated in the cellulose derivative filaments during their manufacture. A composite fabric may be obtained by wetting with water or steam an assembly of fabrics including the laminating fabric and then subjecting to heat and pressure, or by subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure in the absence of liquids or in the presence of solvents or swelling agents. Laminated or composite fabrics may be made for use in making collars, cuffs, neckbands, sweat bands for hats, visors for caps, gauntlets for gloves, stiffening material for coats, or headpieces for gas masks. Specification 502,701, [Group VIII], is referred to.
