Abstract

466,562. Compound fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1935, No. 32874. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1934. [Class 140] A stiffened compound fabric suitable for wearing-apparel, e.g. for collars, cuffs, fronts, &c. of shirts, hats, and parts thereof, and linings, is made by uniting under heat and pressure an assembly of two or more superposed fabrics comprising an outer layer containing filaments or fibres of a thermoplastic organic derivative of cellulose, and an adjacent layer containing a thermoplastic organic derivative of cellulose and a plasticizer therefor, the union being effected in the presence of water but in the absence of liquids (other than the plastizizer) having solvent properties for the organic derivative of cellulose. Alteration of the outer cellulose derivative fabric in texture or appearance is thus minimized. The outer fabric may be made solely from cellulose derivative yarns or may contain also non-thermoplastic yarns such as cotton. It may be knitted, netted, or a woven fabric e.g. a taffeta, satin, plush, or velvet. The layer containing the plasticizer may be formed wholly or partly of cellulose derivative yarns, or may be a non-thermoplastic fabric coated or impregnated with a solution or aqueous suspension of cellulose derivative. The plasticizer may be incorporated in the spinning solution from which the cellulose derivative filaments are formed, or the fabric may be treated with a solution of the plasticizer e.g. in benzol, and allowed to dry. The assembly to be hot-pressed may consist of a fabric containing cellulose acetate and a plasticizer and one or two outer fabrics containing cellulose acetate yarns, or an assembly of six or seven layers having a cellulose derivative and a plasticizer in at least each alternate layer, and one or both outer layers containing cellulose derivative yarns. For example, a woven taffeta fabric of cellulose acetate is padded with its own weight of dibutyl tartrate and is covered on both sides with fabric consisting wholly of acetone-soluble ce.lulose acetate. The assembly is cut to shape and sewn e.g. into a cuff or collar, wetted on both sides with water and hot-ironed or calendered to form a stiffened fabric. Water-soluble or water-insoluble plasticizers or high-boiling or non-volatile solvents may be used, dimethyl and dibutyl phthalate, diethyl and dibutyl tartrate, and triacetin being specified. Cellulose formate, acetate, propionate, and butyrate, and ethyl and benzyl cellulose are suitable cellulose derivatives. The assembly may be wetted with water' before hot-pressing, or steam may be injected during the pressing operation. Heat and pressure may be applied locally by devices having a pattern or design embossed thereon, or the plasticizer may be applied locally, to give local union of the fabrics. Specifications 460,232, 460,523, and 462,242 are referred to.
