[Class 140] Stiffened compound fabrics are made by uniting by means of a water-insoluble adhesive one or more layers of woven fabric and one or more layers of fabric woven from cellulose or regenerated cellulose yarns and parchmentized as by treatment with sulphuric acid. The adhesive may be a solution, e.g. in acetone, of a cellulose derivative such as acetyl, butyl-, or nitrocellulose or a synthetic resin such as polyvinyl acetate with softeners if desired, and is applied to the parchmentized layer. The layers are united by pressure, aided by the action of heat, or a solvent for the adhesive, or both. The layer to be parchmentized may be woven from cotton, linen, flax, hemp, ramie, regenerated cellulose, or mixtures of these yarns, the other layers may be linen, cotton-poplin, calico, or such fabrics containing also silk or artificial silk yarns. The layers may be cut to shape, and if desired sewn up before pressing together. In an example, bleached cotton fabric is treated with sulphuric acid, washed, dried, coated with cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone, and dried. The treated web is placed between two outer layers of cotton poplin, and the assembly is made up in the shape of a collar, sprayed with acetone, and hot-pressed to unite the layers.
