Abstract

468,099. Compound fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. June 29, 1936, No. 17981. Convention date, June 29, 1935. [Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] Shaped textile articles are formed by superimposing a number of fabrics at least one of which contains a derivative of cellulose, and simultaneously shaping and uniting the layers of the assembly with the aid of heat and pressure in the presence of an aqueous medium, e.g. water or steam, and a plasticizer for the cellulose derivative. The cellulose derivative fabric may be woven, knitted, braided, or netted from continuous yarns or filaments of a cellulose derivative or yarns spun from short staple lengths, or from a cellulose derivative in the form of artificial hair, bristles, or straw. Mixed fabrics containing also non-thermoplastic cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose, wool, or silk yarns, or fabrics woven from mixed yarns, may be employed. The assembly to be laminated and shaped may consist of two or more non- thermoplastic fabrics and one or more intermediate fabrics consisting wholly or largely of cellulose derivative, two or more fabrics containing a cellulose derivative and an intermediate non-thermoplastic fabric, or cellulose derivative fabrics only, e.g. one or both outer layers of woven fabric and inner layers of knitted fabric, in which case the plasticizer is applied to an inner layer or layers. The plasticizer may be added to the spinning solution from which the yarns are formed or may be applied as such or in solution in benzol, ethyl or methyl alcohol to the formed yarn or fabric. Water-soluble plasticizers e.g. diethyl or dimethyl tartrate or an acetin, or water-insoluble plasticizers e.g. dimethyl, diethyl, or dimethoxyethyl phthalate, or both, may be used. The plasticizer may be applied locally to produce local stiffening and adhesion. Pigments may be added to the cellulose derivative yarn. The invention may be used in the production of hats or hat linings, glove gauntlets, shoe parts, parts of brassieres, corsets &c., containers, lampshades, and luggage. The article may be finished with hems or taping around the edge. Cellulose formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, ethyl or benzyl cellulose may be used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the shaping and uniting of the layers in the presence of a plasticizer only, and states that the fabrics may be united before shaping. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
