Abstract

Stiffening-material is made by impregnating a base material such as fabric, for example double napped flannel, cotton, muslin, felt, leather, paper, or plushes and velvets of silk, wool or cotton, with a solution of a derivative of cellulose and thereafter subjecting the material to the action of the vapour of a precipitating agent, e.g. superheated steam, whereby the cellulose derivative is rapidly precipitated in the base material. The impregnated material may be passed through a steam chest or between steam jets. After precipitation of the cellulose derivative the material may be dried on heated drums or by hot air. Suitable cellulose derivatives include cellulose nitrite, acetate, formate, butyrate, propionate, and aceto-butyrate, ethyl, methyl and benzyl cellulose. Suitable solvents include acetone, methyl acetone, methyl and ethyl alcohols and the solution may contain plasticizers and high-boiling solvents auch as camphor, triacetin, dimethyl phthalate, di-(methoxy-ethyl)-phthalate, p-ethyl toluene-sulphonamide, dibutyl tartrate, tricresyl phosphate and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Fire-retardants such as hydrated calcium sulphate, ammonium phosphate, cerium oxalate, calcium tartrate, triphenyl or tricresyl phosphate may be added. The base material may be impregnated with warm solutions by immersion, spreading or spraying. The product may be used for stiffening leather articles, e.g. box toes and counters for shoes, by softening the material and pressing on to the leather.
