[Class 140] Stiffened fabrics or fabric articles, e.g. collars, cuffs, fronts, &c. of shirts, hats, or parts thereof, or garment linings, are made by applying in aqueous solution to an assembly comprising two or more layers of fabric consisting in part of a non-thermoplastic textile material and at least one interposed cellulose derivative foil a volatile liquid that, though not at ordinary temperatures a solvent for the cellulose derivative, is adapted to soften it under the action of heat, and submitting the assembly to the action of heat and pressure. Aqueous solutions of ethyl or methyl alcohol, or mixtures, or an aqueous solution of the mono-methyl ether of ethylene glycol, are suitable for use with a cellulose acetate foil. The foil and fabrics may be cut to shape and manipulated as an assembly before union. Cotton, linen, reconstituted cellulose, wool or silk fabrics, which may be woven, knitted or netted and which may contain fibres or yarns of thermoplastic material, may be united. The fabrics on the two sides may be of different character. A plasticizer such as is employed in the film, e.g. diethyl or dimethyl phthalate, or dibutyl tartrate, may be applied in admixture with the volatile liquid. Heat and pressure may be applied by hot ironing, or by passing between calender rolls, between a roll and plate or surfaces, or between two plates or surfaces, one or both pressure members being heated. Adhesion may be effected locally by means of pressure surfaces having designs, e.g. dots, stripes, geometric, &c. patterns, embossed thereon. Cellulose derivatives, other than cellulose acetate, specified, are the formate, propionate and butyrate and ethers such as ethyl or benzyl cellulose.
