[Class 140] A stiffened compound fabric suitable for wearing-apparel, e.g. for collars, cuffs, fronts, &c. of shirts, hats, and parts thereof, and linings, is made by applying in aqueous solution to an assembly comprising one or more layers of fabric formed at least in part of filaments or yarns of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivative and one or more layers of fabric consisting at least in part of non-thermoplastic textile material, a volatile liquid that, though not at ordinary temperatures a solvent for the cellulose acetate, &c. is adapted to soften the same under the action of heat, and submitting the assembly to the action of heat and pressure. Aqueous ethyl or methyl alcohol or mixtures, or an aqueous solution of the mono-methyl ether of ethylene glycol, may be used. The fabric layers may be cut to shape, and the assembled fabrics may be sewn to form the article of apparel, before treating and hot-pressing. Woven, knitted, netted, &c. fabrics, or mixed fabrics containing both cellulose derivative and non-thermoplastic yarns, or containing mixed yarns of cellulose derivative as well as other fibres, may be employed. Non-thermoplastic materials specified are regenerated cellulose, cotton, linen, wool, and silk. The assembly may comprise two or more layers of non-thermoplastic fabric and one or more intermediate layers of cellulose derivative or mixed fabric. A plasticizer such as dimethyl or diethyl phthalate or dibutyl tartrate may be added to the aqueous solution or applied to the cellulose derivative fabric. Heat and pressure may be applied by hot-ironing, or by passing between calender rolls, between a roll and a plate or surface, or between two plates or surfaces, one or both pressure members being heated. The pressure surfaces may be embossed with designs, stripes, dots, rectangles &c. to give local adhesion. In place of cellulose acetate, the formate, propionate, or butyrate, or ethers such as ethyl or benzyl cellulose may be used.
