552,160. Treating textiles with liquids. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1941, No. 12193. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Class 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A compact braid is obtained by braiding non-thermoplastic yarns about a core yarn of thermoplastic material and bonding the covering yarns with the core. The non-thermoplastic yarns may be made from cotton, linen, silk or regenerated cellulose. The regenerated cellulose may have been stretched and completely saponified. The core may be made of an organic ester of cellulose, e.g. cellulose acetate, or a mixed ester, e.g. cellulose acetate-propionate, or a cellulose ether, e.g. ethyl cellulose. Alternatively the core may be made of a synthetic linear condensation product, e.g. the polyamide products derived from diamines and dicarboxylic acids. Before braiding, a plasticizer may be applied to the core yarn either by dipping, spraying or by passing the yarn over a roller immersed in the plasticizer, e.g. dimethyl phthalate. Such a plasticizer may be a solvent for the yarn at higher temperature, but may have no solvent action at ordinary temperatures. The core yarn, with or without the plasticizer, with the non-thermoplastic yarns braided about it may be passed through a bath containing a liquid capable of a softening or solvent action upon the core. The liquid may be acetone, aqueous acetone, or mixtures of acetone and methyl or ethyl alcohol.
