Abstract

512,645. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B. March 11, 1938, No. 7558. [Class 108 (iii)] In an hydraulic shock-absorber of the kind in which an extension g of the piston rod i is provided on the remote side of the piston h so as to maintain a constant volume within the cylinder a, the extension g is flexibly connected with the piston h, e.g., by means of a universal joint, so that it is capable of disalignment with respect to the rod i, thus preventing binding of the piston under lateral stresses. As shown, the end of the extension g is provided with an annular groove w<1>, fitted with a two-part spherical ring w, which is adapted to work in a corresponding divided part-spherical socket s mounted in an adjustable head r of the piston. A slight play is permitted between the groove w' and ring w, and a small adjustable gap s<1> is left between the two parts of the socket s, so that the extension g is capable of both lateral and angular displacement relatively to the rod i. The flow of fluid through the piston is controlled by a spring-pressed sliding valve o in the piston-rod i, and by a spring-loaded plate valve l co-operating with passages k in the piston, while the bulkhead b has passages controlled by ball valves f. Specification 501,516 is referred to.
