Abstract

509,672. Upholstery stuffing-apparatus ; sewing-machines. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 11, 1938, No. 32848. Convention date, Feb. 18. [Class 52 (iv)] [Also in Group VII] Pleated upholstery with a layer of padding between sheets of fabric stitched along spaced lines is produced in a machine having scoring discs to compress the padding in line with the sewing needles. The foundation fabric 22 and padding 19 are fed between a series of lower belts 31 and a pair of upper divergent spiked belts 35 which grip the edges and tension the fabric as it approaches the needles 69. A row of scoring discs 63 compress the padding along lines 62 before it reaches the platform 15 on which the cover pieces 16 are stacked. The latter are manually positioned and pass beneath a spaced series of weighted belts 46, and the whole assembly is further compressed by a second row of scoring discs 65 adjacent the presser feet 66. After stitching, the fabric is stripped from the spiked belts by a bar 80.
