Abstract

20,295. Arbin, G. Sept. 8. Straw-mat sewing machines; feed by chains; trimming.-Straw is led between endless belts 2 to spiked feed-chains 5 which carry the straw past three needles 12 and co-operating chainstitch loopers 34. The straw is thus sewn together to form mats and is stripped from the points 6 of the chains 5 by guide-bars 45, which rise above the points. It is drawn out from the machine by a series of pairs of rollers 46, 47 geared together so that the lower rollers rotate slower than the upper ones. The needle-bars are driven by a cam acting through the link 37, a counterbalanced lever 40, and a link 41. The thread is tensioned by springs 14 under the spools. The take-ups are formed by eyes 19 on the needle-bars 11. The chains 5 are driven by a cam 21 and ratchet-gear 25, 26. Disk cutters on the shafts 48, 49 of the rollers 46, 47 cut the straw to a uniform width.
