Abstract

509,014. Swash-plate engines. WEHINGER, F. Jan. 6, 1938, No. 452. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A guide 42 to which working pistons 2, 3. are connected is operated by a swash-plate 22 through the medium of a pin 28 fixed in the guide and a slide block 25 embracing the pin and working in a slot in a connecting plate 23 which surrounds the swash plate. In the engine shown, there are four parallel cylinders on each side of the swash-plate. Each cylinder has a combustion chamber 6 and is extended to form an annular mixture pump 10. The chambers 14, 15 serve as scavenging pumps, the piston compressing air in the chamber 14 and the adjacent end of the guide compressing air in the chamber 15. The cross-connections of three of the pumps and combustion spaces are shown in Fig. 13. As the piston 2 travels on its working stroke it first uncovers an exhaust port 40; it then uncovers a scavenging port 63 through which air is supplied from a pump chamber 17 of the opposite cylinder and finally it uncovers another scavenging port 48 through which air is supplied from the pump chamber 14. On the instroke, after the scavenging and exhaust ports are closed, the piston 34 of an adjacent cylinder reaches the bottom of its stroke and by means of a passage 64 therein connects the ports 60 and 61, thus allowing mixture from the pump 11 in the opposite cylinder to supply mixture through the port 62. When the piston 2 reaches the end of the instroke, a recess 39 therein connects the pipes 49, 50, 51 so that air is drawn into the pump chambers 14 and 17 and a recess 38 in the piston connects the vaporizer 35 to the pipe 53 and the mixture pump 11 is charged through a channel in the piston 34 and pipe 43. As shown in Fig. 12, a guide may carry a slide block eccentrically and be rotatable so as to vary the stroke of a piston.
