508,291. Internal grinding. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.- GES. Jan. 2, 1939, No. 83. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1938. [Class 60] A device for grinding or honing long bores comprises a frame 1 on which is reciprocable, on rails 8, a housing 2 carrying an electric motor 5, which drives, through gearing 6, 7 a hollow spindle 3 carrying a hone 4. In order to expand the stones 36 of the hone against the wall of the bore, the housing 2 carries an electric motor 11 which drives a screw 21 engaging a thread in a sleeve 16 slidably keyed in a bracket 17. The sleeve carries rotatably, by a sleeve.15, a rod 14 coupled at 13 to a pressure rod 12, which passes down the spindle 3 and engages the bolt 25 of the hone; cones 30, 31 on the bolt 25 serve to press the stone carriers 33 and the stones 36 radially, and springs 28, 34, 35 cause retraction of the stones when the rod 12 is raised. In operation for parallel bores, the motor 11 rotates until the stones engage the bore. walls with the requisite pressure, and then stops until the grinding has proceeded sufficiently to allow the stones to expand further. For treating non-parallel bores, the motor is switched on, with the tool in the narrowest part of the bore, until it stops, when it is switched off, this operation being repeated until the bore is parallel, when the motor is left switched on for finishing.
