[Class 60] [Also in Group XXIV] A machine for producing cylindrical or other surfaces, which are practically free from grinding lines, has means whereby the grinding- wheel, of very fine grit, is rotated very slowly, thereby removing very little material from the surface, but imparting thereto a high finish. The machine shown, for treating heavy rollers, comprises a base 10 having movable thereon a work-table 11, reciprocated by fluid pressure through a cylinder 24, reversing valve 21 and speed control throttle valve 29. The table has thereon a headstock 33 and a tailstock 34 carrying centres 40, 41 respectively to engage the work 49, the ends 47, 48 of which also are supported by rests 44, 45 ; the headstock carries work-driving means 51 and the tailstock carries a wheel-trueing diamond 66. The grinding-wheel 14 is mounted on a transverse slide 57 movable by a screw 60, and the wheel may be driven at high speed by an electric motor 70 operating through a change-speed device 71, and belting 110, or may be driven at low speed through two sets of worm-gearing 101, 106, the gears being thown into and out of operation by the movement of two clutches 86, 107 by a lever 112 pivoted at 113. In operation, the work may be rough ground with a coarse grained wheel in normal fashion, the wheel 14 then being removed and a fine grained wheel substituted. This wheel is then run at normal speed to reduce the work to size, when its speed is reduced to produce the finished surface on the work; the grinding by the coarse wheel may be omitted. Flat, or internal cylindrical surfaces, plain or curved may be finished similarly ; the lower speed for the surface of the wheel 14 is below 300 feet per minute. U.S.A.
