Abstract

507,121. Hydrogen peroxide. SEMIDEI, A. C. June 9, 1938, No. 17213. Convention date, June 9, 1937. [Class 1(ii)] In the production of hydrogen peroxide by reacting barium dioxide with phosphoric acid, the operation is carried out in two successive stages: the first stage at a low temperature during which hydrogen peroxide is formed and the second stage at a high temperature during which the precipitated barium phosphate is coagulated. This prevents the nascent hydrogen peroxide being decomposed by heat. The first stage may be carried out at 0-6‹ C., and the second at 60-70‹ C. Initially, an excess of phosphoric acid over the barium dioxide may be used and in this case several successive operations may be carried out, each operation comprising the two stages set forth above but a fresh quantity of barium dioxide being added between each operation until the whole of the initial phosphoric acid is utilized. Preferably, the time of heating should be reduced during the last operation.
