[Class 97 (i)] A microscope objective comprises a front meniscus member and another meniscus separated from the first by at least three air-spaced positive members, the axial thickness of each meniscus being greater than half the radius of curvature of its dispersive outer surface, the said radius being less than that of the convergent outer surface, and the algebraic sum of the powers of all the surfaces of each meniscus being negative. The algebraic value of the refractive power of each meniscus is preferably greater than one third of the said sum. The radius of curvature of the dispersive outer surface of the front meniscus is numerically less than the focal length of the objective and that of the dispersive outer surface of the rear meniscus is less than twice the focal length. The dispersive outer surface of the front meniscus is turned towards the front and that of the rear meniscus is turned towards the rear. In the case of an immersion objective, the cavity caused by the front concave surface of the objective may be substantially filled by a lens whose refractive index approximately equals that of the immersion liquid.
