Abstract

487,712. Lenses. ZEISS, C., [Firm of]. April 5, 1937, No. 9545. Convention date, April 9, 1936. [Class .97 (i)] In a photographic objective consisting of two menisci bounded by air, the rear meniscus being convergent, the convex surfaces of the menisci face each other, the focal length of the rear meniscus does not differ from that of the entire system by more than one-third of the latter length, and the ratio of the radii of curvature of the two air-bounded surfaces of the rear meniscus approaches more nearly to unity than does the corresponding ratio for the front meniscus. The rear meniscus is a triplet consisting of a divergent lens cemented between two convergent lenses, the refractive index of the front element being greater than that of the medial element, and still greater than that of the rear element. The front meniscus may also be a cemented triplet, the refractive index of the medial element being less than that of either of the outer elements. An additional element, having nearly the form of a parallel plate, may, as shown, be placed behind the rear meniscus. Data are given for two examples.
