Abstract

506,138. Drying solid particles, e.g. of cellulose acetate. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1938, No. 27256. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1937. [Class 34 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] Solid material in particle form, e.g. cellulose acetate containing its own weight of water, is dried first by mechanical means, e.g. passage' between rollers 24 or centrifuging to remove about half the water, .and then by causing the material to pass through a confined space substantially filled by the material to which internal motion is imparted in the space to prevent the formation of channels or packing and passing a current of drying atmosphere across the path of the particles. The material is fed from the serrated rollers 24 to a vertical drying chamber bounded on one side by a wall comprising a series of louvres 26 through which air is blown, e.g. at 110‹ C., from a tapering duct 25 and on the side opposite the louvres by an endless wire apron 17 revolving on wheels 5 and carrying drag hooks 22 serving as agitators. The apron has side flanges 19 fitting in slots in side walls of the chamber to prevent escape of air.
