Abstract

541,734. Drying-apparatus. WOODHAMS, D. C. June 7, 1940, No. 10021. [Class 34 (ii)] Pulverulent or other loose material such as glue powder, soap flakes, starch or pigments is dried in a chamber 5 by an upward current of air which maintains the material in a fountain-like circulation through and around conical baffles 14. Material supplied to the chamber from a hopper 12 collects at the bottom where a channel for the air from a fan 8 is formed in the material by moving a rod 17 to and fro. The air passes around a flat baffle 16 to an outlet 19 leading to a cyclone separator 18, and the dried material is removed through a bottom aperture 22 covered by a slide 23. Additional air is supplied to the upper part of the chamber through a pipe 24 to give a swirling movement to the air stream. In a modification, the conical baffles are upwardly instead of downwardly directed, and in another modification a fan mounted on a vertical axis is substituted for one or more of the conical baffles.
