Abstract
503,531. Metal vapour converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and GALLIZIA, E. Oct. 7, 1937, No. 27239. [Class 39 (i)] In a metal-vapour electric converter in which part or the whole of the tank is arranged to be cooled by a flow of gaseous fluid derived from means for passing the fluid over the said part or whole of the external surface of the tank, at least one tube or duct extends through the space within the tank and is adapted to be traversed by gaseous cooling fluid other than the flow which serves to cool part or the whole of the external surface of the tank, solely or substantially solely to cool the space within the tank. Air is driven by the blower 5 through the jacket 4, and, by suction at the mouth 7 and by convection, is drawn through the tubes 6 and 8, Fig. 1. When the blower, which may be controlled by the temperature of the air issuing from the jacket, is slowed or stopped, circulation through the tubes 6, 8 still continues by convection. In a modification, the jacket extends only part way up the converter and, of the tubes 9, 10, one has its lower end 11, Fig. 2, within a narrower part of the jacket, so that, when the blower is working, most of the air from the jacket passes through the tube 9, and, by suction at a chimney 15, air, some of which comes from the jacket 4 is sucked through the tube 10. When the blower is switched off, circulation is entirely by convection. The chimney 15 may be omitted. Specification 459,558 is referred to.
