Abstract
503,237. Handle - bars. NEALE, H.. \\. Oct. 6, 1937, Nos. 27127 /37 and 24599/38. [Class 136 (iii)] In handle-bars for cycles of the type which arc so connected to a member on the steering- stem as to permit their pivotal adjustment to various positions relatively thereto, the, parts being then clamped together by means of radially-toothed annular clutch members, the inner ends of the handle-bars are bifurcated, and each handle-bar engages a member of the clutch separately from the other handle. bar, whereby adjustment of one handle-bar may be effected independently of the other. The handle-bars are attached to separate forked members 1, 2, Fig. 1 (27127/37) and Fig. 4 (27127/37), each provided with two annular bosses 3, 4 spaced apart and adapted to be interengaged to form a pivotal joint on the periphery of a clamping-head 6. The exposed face of each outer boss 3 is provided with serrations 7 which engage similar serrations on a shoulder 8, and on a ring 10 splined on the end of the head 6. The parts are held together under the pressure of a spring 13 by means of a wing-nut 14 and set-screw 15, which are unscrewed to permit adjustment of the handle-bars. The head 6 is provided with a pair of lugs 18 for adjustable attachment by a bolt 21 to an extension 19 of the stem 20. The handle-bars may be locked in their extreme downturned position, e.g. by a padlock 24 engaging apertured lugs on the members 1, 2. A number of modifications are described. In the form shown in Fig. 2 (24599/38), an adjustable connection between the handle-bar inner ends 1, 2 and the stem comprises a lug 4 adjustably connected by a bolt, 18 and radial serrations 5; 6 to links 13, 14, which are similarly connected by a bolt 17 and serrations 8, 9 to a pair of lugs 10, 11 fixed to the upper end 12 of the steering-stem. Rubber shock-absorbers (e.g. of the .type acting between radial fins on the two relatively-movable parts) may be incorporated in the joints. In another form, more particularly for motor-cycles, outer handle-bar sections are similarly jointed to a central section connected by similarlyjointed links to a member on the upper end of the stem, which member may be connected to the fork by suspension links of the usual form.
