Abstract

563,343. Resilient handle-bars. SCHWINN, F. W. Sept. 8, 1942, No. 12653. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1941. [Class 136 (iii)] An adjustably resilient handle-bar for cycles has a rubber or like layer A, B bent round and vulcanized to the middle portion 11 of the handle-bar 12 and has enclosing the layer, and also vulcanized thereto, a split tube C, D. Surrounding the tube C, D is another split tube E, F, preferably of stouter gauge, and this latter is gripped in the usual bolt-contracted clamp on a goose-neck carried by the steering- post. The tube portions C, D are dimensioned so that under the maximum pressure exerted by the clamp bolt they do not meet, and in the gaps between them are located beads 23 pressed in from the outer tube portions E, F. These beads position the gaps between the portions E, F at locations apart from the gaps between the portions C, D, and serve also to impart a positive non-rotational hold, through the vulcanizations, between the tube E, F and the handle-bar. The portions E, F may meet at the edges under maximum clamping to limit the degree of rigidity impartable. The portion 11 is preferably of reduced diameter to allow of employment with normal clamps.
