Abstract
502,933. Projectile fuzes. JUNGHANS. H., and JUNGHANS AKT.-GES., GEB. June 9,1938, No. 17159. (Class 9 (i)] A combined clockwork, and direct-action percussion fuze of the kind in which the striking pin is divided into a number of separate portions, the terminal member, which pierces the detonator, passing through the hub of the balance wheel, is characterized in that the direct-impact and ignition members of the striking pin are, in the safe position, supported by separate devices which ensure barrel and muzzle safety, and the ignition member is slender to reduce friction of the balance wheel. In the construction shown, the striking pin comprises three members d<1>, d<2>, d<3>, the lower end of the impact member d' being guided in a sleeve d<21> surrounding the upper end of the intermediate transmission member d<3>. The lower end of the ignition member d<3>, which passes through the hub ! l of the balance wheel k, is of reduced diameter, with collar d<31> at the top end. In the safe position, the sleeve d<21> rests upon centrifugal members f forming the barrel-safety device, and the collar d<31> rests upon a pivoted, toothed member g, Fig. 2, which engages with a pinion h of the clockwork train, and forms the muzzle-safety device. Upon discharge of the projectile, the members f are prevented from moving outwardly by the inertia of the sleeve d<21>, until acceleration ceases, when the members d d' of the striking pin are released. When the clockwork commences to function, rotation of the pinion h withdraws the pivoted member g from beneath the collar d<31> of the ignition member.d<3>, which latter is thereby freed and the arming of the fuze completed.
