Abstract
500,869. Discharge lamps. ELECTROLUMINATION, Ltd., and RANGABE, A. R. July 16, 1937, No. 19686. [Class 39 (i)] A luminous discharge tube has a filling of pure neon at a pressure below 2 mm. (1 mm. is referred to in an example), and has the inner face of the tube coated, with a powdered luminescent material, e.g. synthetic Willemite, calcium tungstate or both, and the electrodes coated with materials of low work function, e.g. oxides of strontium or barium or both, so as effectively to overcome any tendency to sputtering. The tube is 16-16 mm. in diameter and six feet long ; the electrodes are sheet iron or nickel to which a paste of barium peroxide is applied inside and out and dissociated by eddy current heating, as described in Specification 500,890, [Group XV]. A binder is applied in vapour form from a heated container, being carried into the tube by an aircurrent and condensed on its walls ; the powdered willemite is then shaken over the walls, and the coating consolidated by baking. The running current is 30 milliamperes.
