Abstract
499,266. Electrode materials. NAAM. LOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 3, 1938, No. 16761. Convention date, June 7, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A cathode-ray tube has a fluorescent screen provided with an adsorbed layer of caesium oxide which emits secondary electrons to prevent a negative charge from the primary electrons accumulating on the screen. The fluorescent substance may be zinc silicate provided with a binder such as nitro-cellulose. The nitro-cellulose is subsequently burnt away and the zinc silicate gently sintered. The caesium oxide may be obtained from capsules inside the tube, one containing caesium or a mixture of caesium chromate and zirconium for producing caesium, and the other containing a compound, such as manganese dioxide, which evolves oxygen at a temperature exceeding the pumping temperature of the tube. The cathode is preferably activated after removal of free oxygen to prevent it being attacked thereby.
