Abstract

498,792. Electrode materials. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 28, 1938, No. 9451. Convention date, March 30, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] A secondary-electron-emitting electrode comprises a compound, not containing free metal, of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, magnesium or aluminium and is prepared by evaporating the metal or a compound in a gaseous atmosphere. When the metal is evaporated, the gas must be chosen to react with the metal so that the desired compound is deposited. When a compound is evaporated the gas may be inert, such as argon or nitrogen, or active, when deposited compound is different from that evaporated. The tube shown comprises a cathode 2, control grid 3 and screen grid 4, producing two streams of electrons which are directed by screens 8, 9 upon the secondary-emission electrode 6 and anode 7. The screen 8 is sprayed with a layer 10 of strontium and barium carbonates and screen 9 carries magnesium 11. When the electrodes are heated by induction, the layer 10 decomposes and produces an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, through which the magnesium evaporates to form a deposit of magnesium oxide on the electrode 6 which mixes with barium and strontium oxides evaporated from layer 10 to form a surface of high secondary emission.
