Abstract

498,226. Rotary engines. BOOTH, M. B. June 4, 1937, No. 15493. [Class 110 (ii)] An engine, pump, or the like, of the rotary abutment type, has axial-displacement means to vary the capacity of the working chamber. Figs. 1, 2, show a rotor Q<4> integral with a shaft Q<1> which is coupled by gears Q<2> to a shaft Q<3> which carries an abutment S<1>. The rotor Q<4> is provided with a flange Q<6> forming one end wall of an annular blade chamber R<2>. A second rotor R<1> carries blades R which pass through slots in the rotor flange Q<6>. A member S forms the outer wall of the working chamber, and carries bearings which support the rotor R<1>. The member S may slide but not rotate. The abutment S<1> has recesses S<2> to accommodate the blades, and engages curved portions R<3>, R<4> of the casing wall and the member S respectively. To balance end thrust on the walls of the working chamber, fluid from the latter is admitted to a chamber S<3> and acts against a piston Q<8> on the shaft Q<1>. When the member S, and the rotor R<1> carrying the blades, are moved to the right, the capacity of the working chamber is reduced. To prevent leakage from the right-hand end of the recess R4 in S, as a recess S<2> passes over it when the engine is operating on reduced capacity, the flange Q<5> is formed on its interior, on each side of the slots in the flange Q<6>, with short curved walls which make a fluid-tight seal with the circumference of the member S while the recess R<4> is brought into communication with either inlet or outlet port. In a modification, Fig. 6, an abutment X has one recess to allow passage of two blades U<2> on a rotor disc U<1>. The working chamber is formed by a casing wall T, and a slidable but non- rotating member W. The blades pass through slots in a disc V<2>. The shaft V<1> is mounted in bearings in the member W, which also carries the abutment member. A piston V4 is under pressure on its left, of fluid from the working chamber. To reduce the capacity of the latter, the shaft V<1> and member W are moved to the left.
