[Class 39 (i)] The field between two deflecting plates is maintained uniform (1) by turning inwardly the edges of the deflection plates X1, X2, Fig. 2, or (2) by providing compensating electrodes el, e2, Fig. 3, adjacent to but outside the edges of the deflecting plates. The electrodes el, e2 are energized from a potentiometer P1, P2 across the supply of deflecting potential. Further compensating electrodes may be provided as at el ... e4, Fig. 5.
