Abstract
497,082. Making ladders, fencing, &c. WUSTER, JUN., H. March 8, 1937, No. 6774. Void. Convention date, March 13, 1936. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the manufacture of ladders from sheet metal, the sides are formed of trough section in two parts each having an out-turned flange 5 and a hook flange 4. After assembly the interengaged flanges are clinched as shown at the bottom of Fig. 1. In a modification the sides are flanged and welded at 8, Fig. 2. Before uniting the parts, the inner members are punched with rectangular holes for the rungs and the outer members are punched with slits 13, Fig. 4. The steps are channel section with tongues 15, Fig. 5, or rectangular section with tongues 16, Fig. 6. After assembly the tongues are clinched over as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The sides may be of oval section flattened to engage the steps. The process is stated to be applicable for the manufacture of railings and the like.
