Abstract

Pyrethrin concentrates are prepared by extracting pyrethrum flowers with acetone or equivalent solvent, such as diethyl ether, benzene, ethyl carbonate or methyl ethyl ketone, removing the solvent, treating the extract with an aqueous alcohol such as 80 per cent methanol, rejecting the residue, removing the alcohol, treating the product with a petroleum hydrocarbon, such as kerosene or a lighter petroleum fraction, rejecting the residue, and if desired, removing the solvent from the final extract.ALSO:Pale coloured pyrethrum extracts containing a high proportion of pyrethrins are prepared by extracting pyrethrum flowers with acetone or equivalent solvent such as diethyl ether, benzene, ethyl carbonate or methyl ethyl ketone, removing the solvent, treating the extract with an aqueous alcohol such as 80 per cent methanol, rejecting the residue, removing the alcohol, treating the product with a petroleum hydrocarbon and rejecting the residue. The petroleum hydrocarbon may be kerosene in which case the solution may be marketed directly, or may be a light hydrocarbon fraction, free from aromatic hydrocarbons, in which case it may be removed by distillation to yield a pyrethrin concentrate which may be re-dissolved in kerosene.
