505,194. Natural resins. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Nov. 5, 1937, No. 30416. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1936. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] Raw materials for lacquers are prepared by heating a fossil resin (such as congo, copal or amber) with a phenol (such as phenol or cresol) in the presence of an indifferent solvent (such as tetrahydronaphthalene). The products, which may be brightened by treatment with a decolorizing agent, are soluble in linseed oil, stand oil and lacquer benzine. In an example ground amber is heated with phenol in the presence of tetrahydronaphthalene and the product treated with fuller's earth.
