547,420. Terpenic aldehydes. STAFFORD ALLEN & SONS, Ltd., and WEST, T. F. April 26, 1941, No. 5417. [Class 2 (iii)] Terpenic aldehydes are separated from mixtures containing non-carbonyl compounds such as alcohols or esters .by reacting the terpenic aldehyde with an amine and removing the unreacted constituents of the mixture, the aldehyde being then recovered if desired by distillation with dilute acid. Examples describe the treatment of Java citronella oil with monoethanolamine, ethylene diamine, 2-amino-2- methyl propanol, morpholine and diethanolamine respectively, and of a fraction of Ceylon citronella oil with cyclohexylamine. The water liberated in the condensation, and the geraniol (in the case of the Java oil) or the terpenes (in the case of the fraction of Ceylon oil) are removed by distillation.
